Media Academy did a 5 day VJ training at The Star newspaper in Johannesburg. The group of 8 had to shoot and edit their own stories. At the last day of the training management of The Star had a look at some of the videos. The results are promising. The newspaper is keen to start with it's own multi media department in the coming period. Videojournalism is the only way to make this successful.One video was shot with a iPhone 3GS and shows that a mobile phone with a camera is a great tool in the newsroom. Using the latest apps it can bring breaking news videos in seconds to The Star's multi media pages.

Media Academy and the Cape Winelands Film Festival organises an 8-day FREE workshop on mobile phone filmmaking during the Cape Winelands Film Festival running from 16 – 26 March 2011. The organisers are calling on young people who would like to be part of this unique experience

As more and more International awarded filmmakers are experimenting with mobile phones, one needs to understand that we are on the verge of a real digital revolution.

The director of South Korean movies Old Boy, Lady Vengeance and Thirst, said that his new fantasy-horror film Paranmanjang was shot entirely on iPhone 4, Apple Inc's iconic smartphone.

The revolution in small cameras and edit methods has changed the most basic rule in filmmaking since its inception – don’t roll tape (or film) until you are sure. That is because the very act of committing to production was so expensive. Today, the rule is the reverse. If you have a creative idea – shoot it, cut it and let’s see what it looks like. It does not cost anything to try.

Many people in Africa use a mobile phone, more than in any part of the world. Mobile phone usage in Africa has increased dramatically over the past years. Most of these mobile phones have a camera function, which makes it possible for millions to tell their own visual stories.

Khayelitsha mobileTV is a partnership between Media Academy and Efubu. The purpose is to bring local entertainment,sport and news to the people of the biggest township of Cape Town.A weekly magazine will be available on on mobile throughout the Efubu platform.In this video you can hear the reactions of the people on the idea of a own mobile Tv station.A group of youngsters will be trained to become video journalists .

In November we had a 5 day specialised video journalism course, one of the students came whole the way from Berlin,Germany to attend the course.The students had the opportunity to work with professional cameras.They finished a story, shot scripted and edited on Final Cut.

We moved all our equipment from Cape Town to Johannesburg for our 5 day filmmaker course. It's so great to see we have students from other African countries. The Media Academy SA is becoming more and more known on the continent.The courses are running from the City Lodge in Sandton,Johannesburg business center.So soon we will have more VJ,s running around with cameras bringing stories from Africa.

It was April 2008 when we met Michael Rosenblum for the first time. We were invited by Ernest Bujok from Concentra Media to come over for the DNA conference in Brussels.If you’ve never had the chance to catch Michael in action, believe me, you’ll want to; he is compelling and convincing and empowering and a hell of a lot of fun.

During a few days we had the opportunity to discuss with Michael a lot of ideas, one of them was to start with a training institute for video journalism here in Cape Town. For Michael is this the ideal way to democratise the Media in South-Africa.

It is therefor a great pleasure that The Media Academy SA can announce a training course in association with New Media/TV Guru Michael Rosenblum in Cape Town.

790tv won the prestigious new media award at the Highway Africa Conference in Grahamstown,South-Africa.790tv is a hyperlocal online TV station for Houtbay and Landudno and the first for the country.Jonathan Berman, also trainer at the Media Academy, runs the station with local video reporters.Ka5 sister station of 790tv will soon start bringing news from the Stellenbosch area.

The global award for excellence in video-journalism "The Concentra Award 2009" will take place on March 4th at Le Plaza Hotel, Brussels. The award will once again be a feature of the digital news summit DNA2009.

The Concentra Award, now in its 4th edition, is the world’s most prestigious video-journalism prize. The Award that comes with a 10.000 euro prize, recognises excellence in video-journalism from broadcast TV, news websites, newspaper sites and IPTV news stations. First presented in 2005, previous winners have included Andy Smyth and Ian Barmer from the BBC. Last year the prize was awarded to Idar Krogstad from NRK for his piece The Nightwatch. The Award includes a special prize for short, quick-turnaround news stories – The Breaking News Award. Last year this was awarded to Al Jazeera’s Tony Birtley for his coverage of the political crackdown in Myanmar.

Details of the international jury will be announced shortly.
The deadline for Award entries is January 16th, 2009.

A regional news journalist from Norway has won the Concentra 2008 Award for videojournalism for his portrayal of a night in a old people's care home.

Idar Eduin Krogstad, a videojournalist with NRK Ostafjells, beat competition from Associated Press and Washingtonpost.com video journalists to claim the €10,000 prize for The Nightwatch.

The Concentra Award 2007: now open for entries

The Concentra Award, one of the most keenly contested annual journalism awards, is now open for entries. The award, that recognises excellence in the cutting edge of digital video journalism, comes with prize money of 10.000 Euro.

The Concentra Award, now in its third year, is for the first time expanding to accept entries from anywhere in the world. To reflect the continuing convergence of the media industry, the jury will also now consider video journalism from news websites, newspaper sites and IPTV news stations in addition to traditional news broadcasts.

The Award is also now open to entries up to 10 minutes in length but we are also announcing a special award for short stories. The Breaking News Award will honour excellence in stories up to five minutes in length that are shot, edited and broadcast in one day.

When television was first invented in 1939 it did not come with an instruction manual. There was no law cast in stone that said you must have a cameraman, a soundman, a producer and an editor. These jobs grew up as a function of a technology that was expensive, complicated and big.

Today, a broadcast video camera can be had for a few hundreds of dollars if not less. They are lightweight, easy to use, almost point and shoot. Broadcast quality editing rooms which once cost a half million dollars are now a bit of software in a laptop. And they can be operated by any 9-year-old.

This revolution in technology is followed by a revolution in production. Where it once required a crew to produce television and video, it now only requires a single person. Where it was once vastly expensive to make TV, it can now be done for the same cost as word processing, and about the same level of technical difficulty.

This is the Videojournalism
or VJ Revolution.

A single person with a single vision married to inexpensive, lightweight technology. Once this meant a writer and a pencil, a painter and a brush and canvas. Now it means a VJ and a camera and laptop.

Just as anyone can sit down and write a novel once they learn how to read and write, so too can anyone sit down and produce television and video, once they are taught how to do it. This is what we do: an entirely new paradigm for television and video production for an entirely new world of video content and demand: broadcast, cable, broadband, wireless, cellphone and beyond.
